Pitch

May 4 – July 2024 / Dimensions Variable, Miami, FL

Pitch is a series of weavings, photographs and sculptures all relating to shifting ground. The term 'pitch,' another name for asphalt, also refers to the quality of sound; from the textures of the ground recorded in black and blue crayon to silhouettes of rocks spray-painted with fluorescent colors used by utility companies, this work creates a visual hum. The titles of the works, such as Tremor, Quake, and Raveling, suggest tectonic movement. The surfaces—gravel, asphalt, concrete pavement—hint at the quiet crisis present in everyday pavement and roads. In these pieces, the painted linen drop cloth is meticulously cut and woven, a process that contrasts the gestural marks with the slow, deliberate nature of weaving and time.

In Beck’s hands, her work becomes a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things. She challenges conventional notions of place and representation while deftly juxtaposing the gradual passage of time with the immediate impressions left upon the surfaces she (re)configures. Through her varied practice, Beck invites viewers to contemplate the transient nature of existence and the enduring beauty that lies beneath/on/above the surface of our everyday lives.

She places emphasis on the ecology of the everyday, citing her journeys through a blend of photography, printmaking, and weaving, all wrapped together through these performative gestures that spur the making. Through her investigation into the intersections of environments–both natural and built–she entrusts both the ground and the sky to act as collaborators in her visual actions.
