Commercially printed double-sided flags, 30’ flagpole
Here features three flags made from rubbings of the ground in the immediate vicinity of the flagpole. Whereas flags usually symbolize a place, this project represents land itself through its texture. Beck’s hyper-local flags use the color palette of commercial printing (cyan, magenta, and yellow) as a parallel for the ground. By lifting the surface of the ground into the sky, the project invites viewers to reconsider what we usually step over or ignore, while also reconsidering what and who flags represent.
